This is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road Widening Project and the first phase of Al Yalayis Interchange project, which comprises four phases, to be completed by the end of November, said Nabeel Salih, Director of Roads, Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA. “This will contribute to smooth traffic flow, especially for vehicles coming from the existing Al Houdh Roundabout towards Abu Dhabi,” Salih added.
Last February, RTA opened three lanes of the road widening project, stretching over 7km from Al Maktoum International Airport Roundabout to Jebel Ali-Lehbab Roundabout and making for a total of six lanes in each direction. It contributed to smooth traffic flow from Al Yalayis Road heading east towards Dubai Investment Park, and west towards Shaikh Zayed Road and Jebel Ali Free Zone. “It also eased the movement of north and south-bound vehicles on Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to and from Abu Dhabi,” Salih said.
In July, Dubai Police listed Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road as the most dangerous, with witnessed 14 deadly accidents in the second quarter of this year as opposed to three in 2015.
Emirates Road came second, with nine accidents involving deaths compared to none last year. The number of fatalities were not revealed by the police.
Police officials had highlighted the importance of intensifying security measures on the roads to reduce serious traffic violations such as failing to keep safe distance, sudden swerving, road rage, stopping in the middle of the road, speeding, not maintaining lane discipline, jumping red lights and entering a road without checking if it’s clear.
